Most people think it takes just a few weeks to employ a new member of staff, (after all you either advertise the position and see the best people who reply to your ad or you use your usual agency or have to spend time looking for one and instruct them and wait for the results) – but does it really happen that quickly? Well having been placing executives in the Franchise industry since 1996, we have found that on average it can take up to 12 weeks to find the right person for your vacancy. So what can the process mean to your business?
If advertising yourself, then once you have chosen the right medium for your business and written an interesting advert that will attract the right candidates, you have to wait for people to see the vacancy on the job board and then respond by sending their cv’s. You will probably find that you will get cv’s from people who do not have the experience you are looking for as people looking for a new role will often apply for anything that takes their fancy whether or not they have any relevant experience of the role or the industry. This means that you will have to take the time to read everything that comes in to your inbox just in case the right person is in there and then spend some time responding to everyone, even if it is just to say thanks but no thanks! Then you spend time trying to get a time to interview which suits both parties and then start the process. And of course you are doing all this while still running your day to day business. All very time consuming for you at what could be a very busy time in your business.
If however, you are using an agency to work with, once you have instructed them on the type of person you are looking for (which will probably take up to ½ hour of your time) and sent them the job/person spec, you can get on with running your business and wait for them to do what you are employing them to do. It will usually take up to 1 week for them to talk to any relevant candidates, get them excited about the opportunity and then get their cv’s to you.
It can then take up to 2 weeks for 1st interviews to be arranged due to everyone’s timetables and once completed you may have to add another 2 weeks before you can do 2nd interviews.
Once you have chosen your best candidate it can take anything from 4 to 12 + weeks before they can join your business depending on their notice period.
So whichever method you choose to recruit your new member of staff, you need to plan ahead of time to ensure you get the right person for the right role at the right time to suit your business. Don’t leave it to the last minute and hope for the best.
